Infrared Sauna
Self-care and well-being are more than just pedicures and massages. Modern technology has opened doors to new ways of promoting self-care for individuals from all walks of life. One of the most popular forms this comes in is the infrared sauna.
Infrared saunas have a wide range of effects to offer. From sleep promotion to help with stress, this is definitively a sauna experience you won’t want to miss out on!
What is an Infrared Sauna?
Unlike a traditional Sauna, an infrared Sauna used red light to optimize heat therapy. Typically, infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature when compared to traditional saunas. This is done by using light to heat the body rather than heating the air.
Infrared light uses one of the longest waves of light known to us. Though similar to red light therapy, infrared light cannot be seen by the naked human eye. According to NASA, “Infrared waves, or infrared light, are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. People encounter Infrared waves every day; the human eye cannot see it, but humans can detect it as heat.”
Individuals use this technology for many different reasons. This is part of what makes infrared saunas so popular. Curious? Let’s take a look at just a few of them.
What does an Infrared Sauna do?
Now that we have a better understanding of what an infrared sauna is, let’s look at what it does.
According to a 2009 paper by researchers from The College of Family Physicians of Canada, infrared saunas may help by lowering blood pressure. Their results found, “There is limited moderate evidence supporting FIRS efficacy in normalizing blood pressure and treating congestive heart failure”. While the results of this study were considered preliminary, it opened up the pathway for further research that explores the medical use of infrared saunas more in-depth.
The same paper also found that using an infrared sauna could help individuals who experience chronic pain. They report that individuals who used infrared saunas were more likely to return to work and have improved sleep. It is important to remember that while this is not a cure, infrared saunas have the potential to offer much-needed relief.
However, other uses of infrared saunas include;
- Soothing sore or aching muscles
- Relaxation
- Improved sleep
- Decrease stress
