What is Red Light?
What do you think of when you see the term Red Light? Do you think of high school science class or the cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album? While red light may be a commonly known term, it is a deep topic once you dive in.
Red light is a naturally occurring part of the light spectrum. While we can see red light, its benefits to us extend far beyond what we can see. And for many, red light has become a part of their wellness routine.
How Does Red Light Work?
Red light therapy works by impacting the mitochondria within our cells. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, doing things like repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation.”
What this means is that when red light is introduced to the mitochondria within our cells, it provides more energy for our cells to do their work. With this excess energy, our cells can then do their jobs more efficiently. This increase in cell activity has led to the creation of red light devices for use in alternative wellness.
How Red Light is Used in Alternative Wellness
When it comes to alternative wellness practices, red light has the potential to address various different issues that individuals from all walks of life experience. Red light has been used to address problems such as blood circulation, fine lines, and increasing mRNA.
According to a review article from researchers in Finland, “Numerous scientific articles reporting improved tissue function, wound healing, anti-inflammatory effects and improved energy metabolism after irradiation with sources of red and near-infrared wavelengths as produced with lasers or light-emitting diodes have been published to this date”.
One such study, published in 2018, found that exposure to red light showed the potential to increase blood circulation. Their results found, “In a diabetes model of endothelial dysfunction, R/NIR restores vasodilation, which lends the potential for new treatments for diabetic vascular disease.”

While there are various studies exploring red light are still preliminary, many individuals are already using it as part of their alternative wellness routine. One of the most common ways red light therapy is used is by using a red light therapy bed. For example, Modern Cryo & Wellness uses the TheraLight360 red light therapy bed, which offers an all-over experience.
